UP Portia Sorority
The UP Portia Sorority is the only Law-based sorority on campus. Its long, rich, and interesting history commenced in 1933 when Dean Jorge Bocobo formed a social club. The organization progressed into a movement that advanced the parity, even superiority in some respects, of women in the legal setting.
Today, the Portians are set to commemorate their 75th anniversary – a celebration of their continuous pursuit, and achievement, of excellence both as individuals and as a group.
The sorority has entrenched its status as a pioneer via diverse activities, from socially relevant: Medical Mission [for employees, staff, and personnel of the UP College of Law], T.O.P.S. [Tahanan Outreach Program and Services in Sta. Ana, Manila]; to instructive: Portia Speaks [laws on reproductive health of women being the most recent topic]; to artistic: Poetic Sojourn [an intimate, open mic program], and to simply enjoyable: Murphy’s Law [our famous trivia quiz show]. But of course, events that strengthen the ties that bind are essential, hence the annual Portia Ball that unite residents and alumnae.
Indeed, all excellent things are as difficult, as they are rare.
